Complete Analysis of Aluminum Baffle Specifications: How to Choose Thickness, Width, Height and Spacing
The specification parameter selection of aluminum baffles directly affects the decorative effect, structural safety and project cost. Many designers and buyers have misunderstandings when selecting aluminum baffle specifications, either blindly pursuing large specifications and thick materials causing cost waste, or selecting too small specifications and insufficient thickness leading to potential safety hazards or poor decorative effects. This article introduces the meaning and selection method of each parameter of aluminum baffles in detail, helping everyone choose the most suitable specifications according to the actual situation of the project.
Thickness is one of the most important parameters of aluminum baffles, which directly affects structural strength, cost and service life. The thickness of aluminum baffles refers to the thickness of the aluminum alloy substrate, excluding the thickness of the surface coating. Common thicknesses on the market are 0.5mm, 0.6mm, 0.7mm, 0.8mm, 1.0mm, 1.2mm, 1.5mm, 2.0mm, 2.5mm, 3.0mm, etc. Thickness selection mainly considers three factors: baffle specification size, use part, installation height. For U-shaped aluminum baffles for indoor ceilings, when the bottom width is within 100mm, height within 100mm, and installation height below 4 meters, 0.6-0.8mm thickness can meet the requirements; when the bottom width is 100-150mm, height 100-200mm, installation height 4-6 meters, choose 0.8-1.0mm thickness; when the bottom width is above 150mm, height above 200mm, installation height above 6 meters, choose 1.0-1.2mm thickness. Groove-shaped aluminum baffles have higher structural strength, so the thickness can be 0.1-0.2mm thinner than U-shaped baffles under the same specifications. Aluminum baffles for exterior walls need to withstand wind loads, so thickness requirements are higher. When installation height is below 20 meters, thickness is not less than 1.2mm; 20-50 meters height, thickness not less than 1.5mm; above 50 meters, thickness not less than 2.0mm. It should be noted that many manufacturers in the market have false thickness markings, nominally 0.8mm but actually only 0.6mm. When purchasing, be sure to actually measure with a micrometer, and the thickness deviation should not exceed 0.05mm. It is not that the thicker the better, too thick aluminum baffles not only cost more, but also are heavy, increase keel and structural loads, and are difficult to install. Appropriate thickness is the best.
Bottom width refers to the width of the bottom surface of aluminum baffles, that is, the visual width of baffles seen by people standing below. Common bottom width specifications are 20mm, 30mm, 40mm, 50mm, 60mm, 80mm, 100mm, 120mm, 150mm, 200mm, 250mm, 300mm, etc. Bottom width selection mainly considers space size, floor height and design style. Small spaces with low floor height (below 3 meters) choose small bottom width, usually 30-50mm, making the space exquisite without depression; medium spaces with medium floor height (3-5 meters) choose medium bottom width, 50-80mm, with coordinated visual proportion; large spaces with high floor height (above 5 meters) choose large bottom width, 80-150mm, looking grand with appropriate proportion. Modern minimalist style usually chooses narrow bottom width, 40-60mm, with slender and exquisite lines; industrial style, new Chinese style can choose wider bottom width, 80-120mm, steady and textured. The bottom width of aluminum baffles for exterior walls is usually 80-200mm, determined according to building height and facade proportion. Super high-rise buildings can choose large bottom width above 200mm, with obvious visual effect from a distance. The ratio of bottom width to height is usually between 1:1 and 1:4, with coordinated proportion and best visual effect. 50mm bottom width with 50-150mm height is more appropriate, avoiding small bottom width but large height leading to unbalanced proportion.
Height refers to the vertical height of aluminum baffles from the bottom to the top. Common height specifications are 30mm, 40mm, 50mm, 60mm, 80mm, 100mm, 120mm, 150mm, 200mm, 250mm, 300mm, 400mm, etc. Height selection mainly considers three factors: visual layering, structural strength, sound absorption and ventilation requirements. The lower the floor height, the smaller the height selected. For 3-meter floor height, 40-60mm height is enough, too large height will produce a sense of depression; the higher the floor height, the larger the height selected. For 4-6 meter floor height, choose 80-120mm height; for floor height above 6 meters, choose height above 150mm. Sufficient height can ensure enough visual layering, with clear lines from a distance. For spaces requiring sound absorption effect, the height is preferably not less than 80mm. Sufficient height can form a cavity and improve sound absorption effect; the height of aluminum baffles for exterior walls is determined according to sunshade requirements. Areas requiring good sunshade effect choose larger height, 100-200mm, and achieve the best sunshade rate by adjusting angle and height. The greater the height, the better the structural strength of the baffle. Under the same thickness, the greater the height, the stronger the wind resistance, but the higher the cost.
Spacing refers to the clear distance between two adjacent aluminum baffles, that is, the width of the gap. Common spacings are 30mm, 50mm, 80mm, 100mm, 150mm, 200mm, 250mm, 300mm, etc. Spacing selection directly affects visual effect, opening rate, cost and sound absorption effect. The smaller the spacing, the denser the top surface, the better the shielding effect, the higher the cost; the larger the spacing, the more transparent the top surface, the better the ventilation and sound absorption effect, the lower the cost. Small spaces with low floor height choose small spacing, 50-100mm, the top surface will not look too messy; large spaces with high floor height choose large spacing, 100-200mm, with good transparency. Projects that need to hide top pipelines choose small spacing, 50-80mm, so that people standing below cannot see the top pipelines; projects that want transparent top and do not want to block pipelines and structures choose large spacing, above 150mm. For projects requiring sound absorption effect, the spacing should not be too small, preferably not less than 100mm, to ensure sufficient opening rate for sound waves to reach the upper sound-absorbing cotton. The spacing of exterior wall aluminum baffles is determined according to sunshade requirements and visual effects. Usually the ratio of spacing to bottom width is 1:1 to 2:1, with the most coordinated visual effect. Spacing selection should also consider the size of lamps and air conditioning outlets. Usually the spacing is consistent with the width of linear lamps, and lamps are installed in the gaps to achieve the effect of seeing light without seeing lamps.
Length refers to the length of a single aluminum baffle, usually customized according to actual on-site dimensions. The single length of indoor aluminum baffles is best not to exceed 6 meters, too long is inconvenient for transportation and installation, and easy to deform; exterior wall aluminum baffles are usually cut to length according to floor height, with single length of 3-4 meters, convenient for installation with few joints. Fixed length can reduce waste and lower costs. When purchasing, it is best to typeset and cut to length according to actual on-site dimensions, do not uniformly make 6 meters long and cut on site, which wastes materials.
In addition to these core parameters, there are several important parameters: first is surface treatment, indoor use usually choose powder coating or wood grain transfer, outdoor use must choose fluorocarbon spraying; second is material, conventional indoor use 3003 series is enough, seaside or high corrosion environment choose 5005 or 6061 series; third is installation system, U-shaped baffles use buckle system, groove-shaped baffles use tooth system, curved baffles need custom special keels.
Here is a simple selection reference formula: 3-meter high office: 0.6mm thick, 50mm bottom width, 60mm high, 100mm spacing, white powder coating; 5-meter high shopping mall: 0.8mm thick, 60mm bottom width, 80mm high, 120mm spacing, dark gray powder coating or wood grain transfer; 8-meter high airport: 1.2mm thick groove-shaped baffle, 100mm bottom width, 200mm high, 200mm spacing, fluorocarbon spraying; 20-meter high exterior wall: 1.5mm thick groove-shaped baffle, 100mm bottom width, 150mm high, 100mm spacing, fluorocarbon spraying. Choosing according to this reference will basically not cause major problems, and specific projects should be adjusted according to actual conditions.
