Differences Between U-Shaped Aluminum Baffles and Aluminum Square Tubes: Core Comparison for Engineering Selection
In the metal decorative material market, U-shaped aluminum baffles and aluminum square tubes are two products with similar appearance but completely different structures and uses. Many buyers and designers often confuse the two, and even some bad businesses use aluminum square tubes to pretend to be U-shaped aluminum baffles or use U-shaped aluminum baffles to pretend to be aluminum square tubes, causing losses to projects. This article compares the differences between the two in detail to help everyone select correctly.
From the structural point of view, U-shaped aluminum baffle is an open profile with U-shaped cross-section, three sides, open top, only bottom edge and two side edges, no top edge. It is usually formed by continuous roll forming of aluminum alloy strip, length can be customized arbitrarily, conventional length within 6 meters. Aluminum square tube is a closed profile with square or rectangular cross-section, four sides, closed around, is a hollow rectangular tube, usually formed by hot extrusion of aluminum rods, conventional length is also within 6 meters. Simply put, U-shaped aluminum baffle is open with only three sides; aluminum square tube is closed with four sides. It is easy to distinguish the two from the cross-section shape. U-shaped baffle looks like the letter "U", aluminum square tube looks like the word "mouth".
From the production process, U-shaped aluminum baffles usually adopt roll forming, using aluminum alloy coils to gradually roll into U-shaped cross-section through multiple sets of rolls. The production speed is fast, 10-20 meters per minute can be produced, mold cost is low, specification adjustment is flexible, products with any bottom width and height can be produced, thickness is usually between 0.5mm-1.5mm. Aluminum square tubes usually adopt extrusion forming, heating aluminum rods are extruded through the die of extruder. The production speed is relatively slow, mold cost is high, each specification requires separate die opening, thickness is usually between 1.0mm-3.0mm, large-specification thick-walled square tubes can only be produced by extrusion. Roll-formed U-shaped baffles have relatively uniform wall thickness, but the R angle at the corner is relatively large; extruded aluminum square tubes have high dimensional accuracy, and the corner can be made into a very small R angle, even right angle.
From the performance point of view, aluminum square tube is a closed section, its structural strength is much higher than U-shaped aluminum baffle of the same thickness and specification. Under the same section size and thickness, the bending strength of aluminum square tube is 3-5 times that of U-shaped aluminum baffle, and the torsion resistance is even incomparable to U-shaped baffle. Because U-shaped aluminum baffle is an open section, its torsion resistance is poor, and section deformation is easy to occur when stressed improperly. But the advantage of U-shaped aluminum baffle is light weight. Under the same external dimensions, the weight of U-shaped aluminum baffle is only 60%-70% of aluminum square tube, and the load on the building structure is smaller. Both can be powder coated, fluorocarbon sprayed, wood grain transferred, etc. in terms of surface treatment, with no obvious difference.
From the installation method, U-shaped aluminum baffles adopt special keel buckle installation. When installing, just clamp the baffle on the clip teeth of the keel. The installation speed is fast, disassembly is convenient, any single baffle can be disassembled separately in the later period. The keel is hidden inside the baffle, no keel and installation parts can be seen from the outside, and the surface is clean. There are more installation methods for aluminum square tubes, which can be connected by inserting core inside the square tube, fixed by corner codes on the side, or hung by special pendants. Installation is relatively complex, large-specification square tubes need welded skeleton, installation speed is slow, later disassembly is inconvenient, installation parts are usually exposed or need hidden treatment. The installation cost of U-shaped aluminum baffles is low, and labor cost is about 1/3 of aluminum square tube installation.
From the cost point of view, under the same external dimensions and thickness, the price of U-shaped aluminum baffles is 20%-40% cheaper than aluminum square tubes. On the one hand, U-shaped baffles use less materials, three sides, aluminum square tubes four sides, material cost is low; on the other hand, U-shaped baffles have high production efficiency, fast roll forming speed, low processing cost. For example, same 50*100 specification, 1.0mm thick, U-shaped aluminum baffle price is about 25 yuan/meter, aluminum square tube price is about 35 yuan/meter, the gap is obvious. But large-specification thick-walled products can only use aluminum square tubes, U-shaped baffles cannot do it.
From the application scenario, the applicable scenarios of the two are completely different. More than 90% of U-shaped aluminum baffles are used for indoor ceilings, especially large-area public space ceilings, such as offices, shopping malls, supermarkets, schools, hospitals, airports, stations, etc. They are easy to install, low cost, good visual effect, and are the first choice for ceilings, a small amount is used for indoor wall decoration. Because of high structural strength, aluminum square tubes are more used in places requiring load bearing or high strength requirements, such as exterior wall decoration, partitions, screens, aluminum grilles, guardrails, modeling structures, etc. They can also be used for ceilings, but because of high cost and slow installation, they are usually only used for small-area modeling ceilings or places requiring specific visual effects. If aluminum baffles are used for exterior wall decoration, they are usually large-specification groove-shaped baffles, not U-shaped baffles. U-shaped baffles have insufficient strength and cannot be used for exterior walls.
Common confusion misunderstandings: first, use U-shaped aluminum baffles to pretend to be aluminum square tubes for exterior walls or partitions, which are easy to deform after installation due to insufficient strength, posing safety hazards; second, use thin aluminum square tubes to pretend to be thick U-shaped baffles for ceilings, although the strength is enough, the cost is high, and the installation effect is not good, the gap between square tubes is not easy to control; third, think that aluminum square tubes are better than U-shaped baffles, in fact, the two have different uses, U-shaped baffles have higher cost performance and better effect for ceilings, aluminum square tubes are more suitable for structures or exterior walls.
Selection suggestions: U-shaped aluminum baffles are preferred for large-area indoor ceilings, with high cost performance, fast installation and good effect; aluminum square tubes are selected for exterior walls, partitions, guardrails, load-bearing structures, and shapes requiring welding; small-area modeling ceilings can be selected according to design effects, aluminum square tubes are selected if four sides need to be visible, U-shaped baffles are selected if only three sides need to be visible. Pay attention to the cross-section when purchasing, and do not be shoddy by bad businesses.
